From Traditional Paths to Empowered Learners
Project Unschooling is rooted in a personal journey that transformed how we approach education, growth, and life itself. When we made the bold decision to step away from traditional schooling for our children, we embarked on an extraordinary path of curiosity-driven learning. This journey began with our son Aarfeen, whose remarkable experiences have shown us the boundless potential of unschooling.
Aarfeen’s Journey
Aarfeen’s story is one of passion, purpose, and early leadership. Freed from the constraints of a rigid classroom, Aarfeen’s natural curiosity blossomed into meaningful action. At just six years old, he became one of the youngest climate leaders, addressing primary students at Stow Primary School in Scotland. It was there that his ability to connect with others and inspire action first shone through.
Unschooling provided Aarfeen with the freedom to learn from his environment, encouraging
him to think deeply and act purposefully. By fostering his innate love for nature and the planet, he began his journey as an activist at an age when most children are only beginning to explore their identities.
His impactful work caught the attention of global audiences. He was featured by Ellie Linden in The Earth Gang blog and invited by Paul Webb to appear on his podcast at B2B Energy. These milestones not only amplified Aarfeen’s voice but also underscored the importance of nurturing children’s passions without imposing limits.
Today, Aarfeen is channeling his experiences into writing a storybook aimed at inspiring climate action among children his age. His storytelling is a powerful tool to raise awareness and empower young readers to take steps in protecting our planet.
A Multifaceted Learner
Unschooling has also enabled Aarfeen to pursue a wide array of interests, from academics to extracurricular activities. He is currently learning Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, swimming, gymnastics, football, roller skating, languages, math, religion, and computer skills. This diverse learning journey has allowed him to grow holistically, developing essential life skills while pursuing his passions. Most importantly, Aarfeen has become a role model for his younger brother Rafay, inspiring him to embrace curiosity and explore the world in his own unique way

Through Aarfeen’s journey, we’ve seen firsthand how unschooling can unlock a child’s potential by removing the stress of traditional schooling, peer pressure, and the relentless race for grades. It’s a path that nurtures individuality, creativity, and a lifelong love for learning.
